“ESTEBAAAAAANN!” My piece for the Alternate Ending show at the Bottleneck Gallery in Brooklyn, NYC. It’s a limited edition of 30 for a bargain price, so if you want it, go get it before somebody else does, here.

And If you live in the area, one- you are incredibly lucky to live in such a city, (as I enjoyed myself immensely the last four days, stomping around various boroughs), and two- you should definitely go and see what the other artists involved have done! I am now the very proud owner of “Air Gump” by Jeremiah Britton :D

Life is full of endings that we cannot change, goodbyes we cannot take back, and letters we cannot un-send. Classic movie endings stay forever frozen in our mind, and a tragic book ending can haunt you for days. That is why Bottleneck decided to change the rules of space and time, commissioning over 60 gifted artists for our “Alternate Ending” exhibit. Each artist will present a piece representing what they wish had happened at the end of a certain film, video game, or book. It is our chance to rewrite the end, and we hope to see you there.

I answered a few (good) questions for a rather nifty site which all you ‘creatives’ should follow.

Questioning Creatives has interviews from a lot of very good Illustrators and designers I am really very honoured to have my name and thoughts up there. Also I was jacked on Espresso when I wrote the answers so there is some mania in the answers.

The image has nothing to do with the questions, it’s just an old, old piece (2011), a broad billed parrot made extinct by rats. To be precise.

I just realised I hadn’t uploaded this to tumblr. Did this sometime last year for Flamingo, (gladly I can say I’ve improved my figure drawing since.) On a Daily basis I go to public spaces and stare intently at people I don’t know. However this seems perfectly natural to me if I have pencil in my hand. In fact it’s a compulsion, I get anxious, physically upset If I’m sitting somewhere and I don’t have something to draw on.

interview 02: Shaun Lynch

bio. After graduating from Cambridge School of Art, I decided to stick around,
slowly building up a portfolio. Trying to convince people they should pay
me to draw all day. I have a perpetual, gnawing sense of time running out
and that I should be working more, learning more and more, doing more. And
a sometimes overwhelming feeling of not contributing anything useful to
society. So I draw a lot of science and medicine and nature things, in
effort to feel more intellectual. I have a fairly healthy curiosity (which
when combined with the internet can seriously damage the work ethic.) Also
I draw a lot in cafes, probably not enough though. It’s never enough.

1. What’s your illustration process and use of mediums like?

For producing ideas I generally get writing, jotting down words and
phrases linked to the brief or from a piece of writing I’m illustrating
for, often spider diagrams or mind maps whatever you want to call them.
just to try and find the best idea, not just the first idea- though
sometimes the instinctive first ideas are very important. Then I’ll
scribble some small barely comprehensible thumbnail sketches to find out
if whatever composition I have in my head will work on paper. Then once
I’ve found a composition I’ll refine it and make a larger rough which will
then go onto the lightbox so I can draw in the final linework and details.
For the linework I use mechanical pencils, pens, dip pens, sticks,
crayons- whatever is necessary to express the idea properly. Linework is
then coloured in Photoshop and texture added, mostly from old bits of
paper, yellowed and aged books. The texture is an important part of the
process; it makes the image look like it could have been printed, like it
perhaps has some history- adds an unconscious level of credibility. But it
has to be subtle, I want it to be tactile but not looking like an obvious
montage of layered up photos.

2. you have a really great style & usage when it comes to your hand done
type work you see it very clearly in your illustration called “The Enormous Radio”. how do you go about getting ideas for your type and is there a
process you go through when making or laying out hand done type?

Firstly, Thank you!
I take a couple of different approaches when handling type; it depends on
what the type is needed for in the image,it’s either an entity occupying
the same physical space as the rest of the composition or it’s treated as
a separate graphic element which sits adjacent to the rest of the image.
So for instance, in the Enormous Radio the type is there to form the
window ledge and wall of the building. (Originally I had the window frame
and bricks all drawn in but they became unnecessary.)And for something
like the E.D.S Fest poster the band names and show times etc had to draw
the focus, so I kept them separate from the tattooed arms. The Actual look
of the type is also dependent on it’s purpose;the band names needed to
have the same stark energy and movement as a rock gig, so elaborate script
or Victorian serifs would have been out of place for example. And for ‘the
Enormous Radio’ the type needed to be as solid and structural as the art
deco radio described in the story.
But that sounds like a completely academic process. It isn’t. It’s mostly
instinctive, I go with what feels right, but it has to have purpose and
meaning or else it just becomes an unsuccessful, boring bit of design.
(Like my “Birds” image; indulgent nonsense.)
As for drawing the letters themselves, it’s pretty much the same process
as drawing everything else. Whether I use a brush or a mechanical pencil
is determined by what the type needs to express. With the EDS fest poster
I used black acrylic paint and a dry brush to get that fast,scuffed feel.
Sometimes I even use a ruler and a set square.

3. how do you go about getting your color palettes?

I noticed a while back my colour palette was getting stale and routine,so

lately I’ve been trying to push it and change it up. The colours, likeeverything else in the image, have to be there for a reason, certain colours to effect certain moods and evoke certain responses.I do enjoy a good dose of nostalgic faded tone though, like the texture, if it’s kept subtle it adds authenticity and credibility to the image.

Perhaps, in my head anyway, I’m more likely to be affected by an image if
it looks like a memory. So that plays an important part in the instinctive
choice of colours, and I’ll spend a long time in the last stages of an
image trying to perfect the colour balance. Which means adjusting sliders
in Photoshop until my eyes water.

When I’m actively searching out colour schemes to try and push an image
forward then I’ll turn to the internet, colour forecasts for fashion
design are pretty useful for finding interesting palettes. Photography as
well, particularly the older film photography, but I guess that goes back
to that sickly, indulgent nostalgia. You can get all that in old fashioned
library books as well- it’s a good excuse to get out of the workspace and
see some real colours.
